As a rep, you may wonder how a typical day goes for your average field manager, particularly because working remotely does not afford you the same awareness of your teammates as does working in an office setting. Well, there's no real mystery to it. A day in the life of a field manager is akin to a day in the life of any manager in any business setting.
And just like any other manager in any business setting, perhaps the most important skill for any field manager to master is time management. The field manager typically has a lot on his or her plate at any given moment, and it can be overwhelming to be juggling all of those balls in the air, especially if s/he doesn't have a set plan in place as far as how to handle those balls.
A field manager needs to prioritize the tasks at hand by their level of urgency because, simply put, there just aren't enough hours in the day to satisfy everyone and everything in one fell swoop.
Interestingly, the amount of time a field manager spends on management activities like planning, development, and managing his/her team's performance has been found to have a direct influence on that company's growth and sales figures. The more time that is spent, the better the numbers.
Even more interestingly, when field managers roll up their sleeves and get right in alongside their reps to help them work with the customers and whip stores into shape, the lower the company's numbers dip. It's almost like the customers are telling the field manager: "don't quit your day job! Stick to what you do best, and manage!"
So, how can we reduce the need for field managers to help out in the field in the first place? By providing them with the tools they need to cut down on the amount of time they spend doing tasks not directly related to being a manager. And how do we do that? Well, a good time management software package is certainly a great place to start.
